Christopher Nolan’s Epic Adaptation

Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey’, set to release in 2026, includes a glitzy cast of Hollywood favourites. With Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as his son (Telemachus) and a cast consisting of Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, the film world has been buzzing with anticipation.

The movie is based on a Greek epic by Homer, written around the 8th or 7th century BCE, and one of the oldest works of literature to survive to this day. The tale follows the Greek king of Ithaca, Odysseus, and his journey home following the end of the Trojan War and the subsequent demise of the Trojans. While it is an epic homecoming narrative, the tale is rife with action, adventure and heroic challenges typical of Greek stories.

So, why choose Marrakech as a filming location? Well, Odysseus’ journey takes him 10 years to complete, and in doing so, he travels across an eclectic range of terrains and communities. The rich history of Marrakech and surviving architectural feats are also a likely source of enticement for such a historical homage to Homer’s epic.
